My approach to sustainable design covers three technical areas, which can be researched, evaluated, and optimized.

They say you can’t boil the ocean. My process with every client starts with prioritization.

Low Toxin / Healthy

Free of red-list toxins, chemicals of concern, and materials known to be harmful to human and environmental health, achieved through vetting and removal/replacement of ingredients, or recommendation/sourcing of other products. A pre-requisite to low waste or circular systems.

EXAMPLE PROJECTS
Google R+D for New Campus Development, Product Design Lead, 2016-2018.
See article: Healthy Materials and Regenerative Design for a description of R+D for Charleston East + Bay View.

Residential interior design projects optimizing for low toxin materials and products, 2015-Present.

Low Waste / Circular

Designing waste out of a system involves choosing non-toxic recyclable or 100% bio-based raw materials and products. This way, materials extracted can be reused in a closed loop system. Next, layer in circular design, construction, and manufacturing strategies. Co-benefit: low carbon.

EXAMPLE PROJECTS

Low Carbon / Decarbonized

Decarbonized design examines and edits material and product specifications, manufacturing, and supply chains to create a lower emission, lower carbon footprint for a product, company, or building. Achieved through decarbonization principles, carbon calculations, LCA and EPD analyses, and ESG.
